Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 5 Part 3 Faded Glory

Faded Glory

On your blog, list three different ideas or strategies for raising funds to preserve the Great Barrier Reef. What could you do to fund raise here in New Zealand?

1. You can sell off pictures or postcards of the Great Barrier Reef.

2. You can make people have permission and pay a fee to scuba dive near it.

3. You can run a raffle and have a visit to the Great Barrier Reef as the winning prize.

Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 5 Part 2 The Black Drain

The Black Drain

On your blog, tell us:
1) The names of the rivers. 2) The location of the rivers. 3) What is being done to clean up the rivers (if anything).

1st River.
The Grey River is in North West of the South Island of New Zealand and meets the sea near where I live in Greymouth.
It is being polluted by sewage from the surrounding towns and I can't find anything that says they are trying to stop this from happening.

2nd River.
The Mokihinui River is just North of Westport on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.
It is being polluted by waste products and milk from the surrounding farms.
I can find anything that says they are going to do anything about this.

Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 4 Part 3 Picture Perfect

Picture Perfect

For this activity, choose one of the following three selfies. From left to right: Selfie #1, Selfie #2, Selfie #3

On your blog, write a short story about what you think is happening in the picture. Be sure to tell us where you think the people are and what you think they were doing at the time that they stopped to pose for the selfie. To earn full points, the story must be 8 – 10 sentences long.

I choose the first one.

I think this selfie is showing a sports team after they have won their competition. I think it is taken in a big stadium and they look very happy which is why I think they have won. I don't know what sport it is but it might be rugby, soccer or maybe basketball. They are all wearing the same blue ribbon around their neck and it looks like it might have a medal on the end of it. The are all men who look healthy and happy to have won.

Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 4 Part 1 Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

On your blog tell us which of the three options you would take to explore Milford Sound. Be sure to tell us why you have chosen this option.

The Boat.

If I was going to go to Milford Sound I would choose to go there on a boat. The reason I have chosen the boat is because I'm not a big fan of heights or walking long distances. I think the boat would travel at a nice speed to see the scenery up close and it looks very expensive.

Summer Learning Journey Week 2 Day 3 Part 3 The Midnight Zone

The Midnight Zone

The squid weighs approximately 500 kg.

Let’s imagine that the average adult can lift 25 kg and the average child can lift 15 kg. How many adults and children will it take to move the giant squid into its new room at Te Papa?

On your blog, tell us how you will solve this maths problem. You can write your answer in words, use a Sketchpad image or post a video explaining how you would figure it out. Be sure to give us your final answer.

It would end up taking 20 Adults to lift it if they all lifted 25kg

20 x 25 = 500Kgs

or 500Kgs divided by 25Kgs = 20 Adults

Summer Learning Journey Week 1 Day 5 Part 2 Living on the Edge

Living on the Edge

On your blog, write a letter to your best friend or a family member telling them about your trip to the tundra. To earn full points your letter must have a greeting (eg. Dear…) followed by 5 – 6 sentences of information about what your experience.

Dear Mum, Dad and Aedan,

Greetings family, we have arrived at the Tundra in Greenland and I want to tell you about what it has been like so far.
It is absolutely freezing here at -30oC, with just a little wind but it is very, very cold outside. I can not go outside without wearing very warm, thick clothes and a fur hat.
Outside my door I can see lots of ice and some little pools of water where it has melted with the little bit of sunshine.
It is very rocky on the ground and there are no trees anywhere to sit under and read a book. The ground has a lot of moss on it and it is very cold.
I have not seen any animals or people here but it has not rained at all yet either.

Love from Hamish.

Summer Learning Journey, Week 1, Day 3, Part 2. The Secretive Skink

The Secretive Skink
On your blog list three pros (good things) and three cons (bad things) about working as a DOC ranger. At the bottom of your post, tell us whether you would like to be a DOC Ranger or not.

Pros:
1) Getting to see and work with all the animals and plants.
2) Helping to save the wildlife.
3) Living somewhere quiet and peaceful.

Cons:
1) You would miss your friends and family.
2) Miss some of your other favourite things to do like go to the movies.
3) Harder to get help if you hurt yourself.

I would not like to be a DOC ranger because I would miss my family and some of the other things I do. I would like to work with the animals but not if I had to live so far away from everyone else.

Summer Learning Journey. Week 1, Day 3, Part 1. Awesome Animals

Awesome Animals

On your blog, post a description of your beast. Use interesting adjectives (describing words) to tell us about your beast.
My special beast would be a DragonCat. During the day it would be the size of a bus and sit on the roof of my house but at night it would have the ability to shrink to the size of a cat and sleep in my bed. It would be tortoiseshell coloured and have thick leathery scales underneath, with soft fur over the top. It would have small wings to help it get to the roof and a waggly tail.
It would have long claws, but like a cat it chooses whether to have them out or not.

Summer Learning Journey, Week 1, Day 2, Part 3. Weird and Wonderful

Weird and Wonderful
On your blog, tell us how to solve this maths problem. You can write your answer in words, use a Sketchpad image, or post a video explaining how you would figure it out. Be sure to give us your final answer in millilitres (ml).

To solve this maths problem you would go 365 x 3 = 1095mls.

You can also go 300 x 3 = 900 and 60 x 3 = 180 and 5 x 3 = 15 and then
add 900 + 180 + 15 = 1095mls.
